The average frequency for grooming is every 6 to 8 weeks. The optimum grooming schedule should be every 2 to 3 weeks. Pets can be groomed as frequently as once a week.
It is very important to make sure that all the soap is rinsed off. If the pet is not rinsed completely it can lead to dry, itchy skin that will cause the pet to scratch excessively and can easily cause skin irritations and maybe even open sores.
Never use a blow dryer to dry your pet. The heat can burn their skin as well as damage their fur. On certain breeds, the heat can also cause static and matting. A no heat setting is ok, but you should never blow the air into the ears or eyes, as this can cause injuries.
Warm water is best. Too hot and you can burn your pet. Too cold can make your pet more suseptable to colds and pnuemonia.
Once your pet is completely dry, they should be brushed out completely. Waiting to brush them can lead to matting.
Never use human shampoo. These contain chemicals that can be very harsh to your pet. If you are not going to use shampoos made for dogs and cats, then use a baby shampoo, as these are milder and don't have the chemicals.
